African Women are…Booty?…Here’s what the ‘World’ had to say…

As a young (South) African female, temporarily in the United Kingdom, in an international educational institution, I thought it would be a great idea to gauge on “out of the classroom” perceptions of my peers from all over the world on what they think/feel/believe when asked “African women are”… and below were some of the responses.

How would you complete the “African Women are…” phrase?

Enjoy!

  • You’re right, “exotic” and “booty” are quite unsettling…I think people ackowledge the Oprah’s, Beyonce’s, Sirleaf Johnson’s etc for their occupations and maybe not so much for their impact, power and influence. So they are only lauded on a superficial level.

  • Interesting take Nswana! I also do wonder how the responses would have differed had the ‘survey’ not been conducted by an African woman. I did however find the the terms ‘booty and exotic’ problematic, particularly from a generation that lives in the information age. At the same time, if someone approached me and asked me about Caribbean women or Korean women, women I do not have a genuine memory collection of interactions with, when I think of it that way, those responses are pardoned. I just also feel like in the age of Oprah, Beyonce, Sirleaf Johnson, Nkosazana Zuma and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Condeleeza Rice…come ooooon!

  • LOL very interesting responses…no negatives but quite a few safe/indifferent ones. I wonder how the responses would change in a lab setting where there was no African woman asking them the question…
